FINISHED HONDA SCRAMBLER 305 RESTORATION

Doc’s Motorcycle Parts of Waterbury Connecticut has delivered it’s completed restoration of a 1966 Honda Scrambler 305 (CL77).

The Restoration Job began in February and was finished May 27th.  After tear down, paint, polish, chrome, full assembly and a GREAT test ride.  The Scrambler 305 was ready to be delivered.

“When Honda entered the U.S. market in 1959, it spent a lot of time and energy expanding the market for motorcycles in the United States, convincing Americans that nice people rode around on two wheels. Honda’s success opened the door for other Japanese manufacturers, who started offering high powered models designed specifically for the American. As interest in offroad riding continued to build, Honda turned its attention to designing lightweight, powerful bikes that would excel in the dirt.  The first CL77s were imported into the United States in 1965. They were a dual-sport version (then known as scramblers) of the CB77 Super Hawk, a 305cc overhead cam parallel twin. The Super Hawk had been on the American market since 1961, two years after Honda had established its import arm in Los Angeles.

In 1965, Honda finally decided there was an American market for a 305cc scrambler. Cycle World immediately tested the bike and liked it, even through it was not the production racer they had hoped for. Cycle World referred to the CL77 as a “gentleman’s scrambler,” stating, “It is, in fact, the appeal of scrambler-type styling that sells the CL77.” Period testers found the CL to be too heavy for competition and not as fast as the CB, but perfectly adequate for both offroad fun and reliably getting to work.” – Margie Siegal Motorcycle Classics Magazine

Doc’s Motorcycle Parts of Waterbury Connecticut is currently restoring a 1966 Honda Scrambler 305 (CL77).

Finally just received parts back from chroming, they can out really nice… so worth the wait.  Now we will begin to assemble the bike back together and should have a finished motorcycle shortly!!

Doc’s Motorcycle Parts of Waterbury Connecticut is currently restoring a 1966 Honda Scrambler 305 (CL77).  

After getting the bike fired up,tearing it down, and taking care of polishing, next up was powder coating, chroming, and paint.

Just got the powder coat done and we think it came ut GREAT!!

HONDA SCRAMBLER 305 RESTORATION

Doc’s Motorcycle Parts has begun this years Winter Restoration project.  The Customer is looking to restore his 1966 Honda Scrambler 305 (CL77).  Doc’s Motorcycle Parts is looking forward to making another customer happy with the type of motorcycle restoration that he is looking for.  In this case we are going to get the bike as close to original as possible within the guidelines and direction of the customer.  With that said, he is not looking for a “show-stopper” restoration, but we are confident that he is going to be blown away with the outcome.

“The Honda CL77 or Scrambler 305 was the off-road or scrambler version of the Honda C77 Dream and the CB77 Super Hawk of the 1960s.

Scramblers, designated CL by Honda, differed from the sport bikes (designated CB) to allow for some off-road riding. The CL77 differed from the CB77 Super Hawk in a number of ways. To increase ground clearance, it had upswept exhaust pipes running along the bike’s left side. A bigger tube frame with a front downtube gave extra strength and ran through the space where the electric starter was mounted in the CB and CA models. Eliminating the starter gave clearance in the frame, and lightened the total weight of the bike. It had a small-capacity painted fuel tank, fork boots, 19-inch front and rear wheels, coarser-tread tires (called universals), a taller handlebar with cross-brace, and abbreviated fenders. Early models had painted aluminum fenders.

The 305.4 cc (18.64 cu in) overhead cam engine had a redline of 9000 rpm and contrasted sharply from the low-revving European and American bikes of the day. Running straight pipes with small internal baffles, CL77s featured a loud and very distinct sound from the 180 degree firing order of this parallel twin.Many of these motorcycles featured aftermarket snuff-or-nots (commonly misspoken as “snuffer nuts”),which featured a flat washer like piece of metal which pivoted just inside the tips of the exhaust pipes to quiet or increase the sound of the motor at any time during operation simply by twisting the external knob.

In later years Honda joined the end of the exhaust pipes with an external factory installed muffler to control exhaust noise. At first it was slipped on and clamped. Later models came with only one of the twin side pipes welded onto the slip-on muffler. The last version came with both pipes welded to the slip-on muffler.” – From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
